Presenting this sensational pair of safari chairs in rosewood and leather.
We’ve restored these chairs using fine oil-tanned leather that will wear beautifully and continue to grow in patina over time.
This has been used on all of the leather components including the custom made belt straps and arm rests.
The wood is certainly a rare and exotic wood.
From our research, it appears to be Kingwood, (related to African Blackwood and Black Ironwood found in South Africa). A true rosewood in the Dalbergia genus, Kingwood is among the densest (and probably strongest) of all the rosewoods. There is very little mechanical data available on Kingwood, though given its weight, and its relation to other rosewoods, it is extremely stiff, strong, and stable.
In terms of its history, Kingwood supposedly got its name from several French kings (Louis XIV and Louis XV) that preferred the wood in the use of fine furniture.
We’ve kept a fair amount of the vintage patina on the wood during the restoration process by primarily cleaning and oiling it - Which allows it to join in harmony with the aged leather visuals.
Finished off with custom antique bronzed hardware and buckles.
While Kaare Klint was the original designer of the Safari chair (debuting in 1933), this particular chair we believe may have been custom made in South Africa and we’d date it around the 1950s.
An early version and a unique edition with it being comprised of such a unique material.
